Severe Weather Safety and Advice From SkyWarn UK

If you believe that flooding or flash flooding is about to occur then seek higher ground immediately. If an order to evacuate is given then follow it. Monitor weather and flood alerts as they are issued and updated.

When You Have Not Been Advised to Leave

  • Get regular updates from the Environment Agency, SEPA, or Rivers NI.
  • Make sure you have a battery powered radio and spare batteries to hand
  • Keep your Family Disaster kit with you
  • Keep children and pets indoors
  • Make sure you have sufficient cash and credits cards to hand, and keep the fuel tank full in your car in case you are advised to leave

If You Are Advised to Leave

  • Turn off all utilities: gas, electricity, and water
  • Pack your Family Disaster Kit
  • Lock windows and doors before you leave, ensuring your home is as secure as possible
  • Monitor the radio for latest news and flood information

Immediately Before A Flood

  • Bring in any outdoor items that may cause damage or be lost if flooded
  • Do not walk in to flood water in order to retrieve anything
  • If you are not at home, move to safe ground and wait
  • Ensure you have an adequate supply of drinking water. Fill bottles, jugs, and bathtubs.
  • Place all valuables and important documents in a safe, waterproof container and store securely

During A Flood

  • If you are not at home then do not attempt to walk or drive through flood waters. Instead seek safer ground.
  • Keep children and pets away from flood waters, storm drains, and sewers
  • If you are in your vehicle do not attempt to drive through water. Seek an alternative route. If you find yourself in flood water and your vehicle stalls abandon it and climb to higher ground if safe to do so
