Thunderstorms: After The Storm

Severe Weather Safety and Advice From SkyWarn UK

Once the storm has passed it is safe to provide aid to someone who has been struck by lightning. It is often thought that touching someone who has been struck by lightning should be avoided due to the risk of electrocution. However, a person who has been struck by lightning carries no electrical charge, and it is safe to touch them.

If you come across someone who has been struck by lightning:

  • Call 999 immediately
  • Check for breathing and a heartbeat. If the heart has stopped administer CPR. More information on how to administer hands-only CPR can be found by visiting the British Heart Foundation website or from your local St Johns Ambulance.
  • If the victim has a normal pulse and is breathing, check for any other injuries. Someone struck by lightning will often have severe burns in at least two locations: where the lightning entered and then exited the body

Beware of Hazards

  • Avoid any downed power lines. Keep pets and children at a safe distance from them too
  • If you have lost power, it is safer to use battery powered torches rather than candles to reduce the risk of fire
