Winter Weather: After Severe Winter Weather

Severe Weather Safety and Advice From SkyWarn UK

Once the snow has stopped falling it can be tempting to get outside, especially if you have been stranded indoors for some time. However, roads, pavements, and other surfaces can remain dangerous for days, and temperatures may remain dangerously cold for several days or more. You should continue to monitor weather forecasts, and follow these tips below once the storm has passed:

  • Continue to conserve food and water until you are able to replenish supplies
  • Avoid walking on icy surfaces or on hilly terrain until all ice has melted. Even once snow, sleet, or freezing rain has stopped falling surfaces can remain icy for a long time.
  • If you have been stranded in a car, be sure the storm has passed before venturing out on foot
  • Beware of driving on roads that may have thawed during the day but could have refrozen at night when temperatures drop
  • If you have lost power use torches and battery powered lanterns whenever possible. If you must use candles do not leave them unattended.
  • If you suspect you have a frozen pipe call a plumber to check. If your pipes are indeed frozen or burst then switch off your water supply.
